Landscape architecture education is a process that gains the skills of designing suitable outdoors in terms of both technical and esthetic the landscape architect candidates. In this sense, landscape architecture is a science which has an artistic dimension and includes not only two dimensional but also three dimensional composition studies. Basic design class is the first class which conveys the basic design principles to the students that are necessary for constituting the compositions which has been mentioned before.
In Selcuk University Landscape Architecture Department, “Basic Design” class is taught in the first year, second term. In the scope of the class the design principles such as similarity, contrast, balance, visual hierarchy, movement is conveyed to the students and the students study weekly on some abstract planar compositions which are related to these subjects. As for three dimensional abstract composition study, each student combines the design principles that they learned by choosing a polyhedron. In this paper, the content of the Basic Design class will be mentioned in detail and some visual study samples which made by the students will be given.
