Abstract:
Anxiety is an important factor that prevents some people success in language learning. Many of these people feel anxious in classroom situations (Horwitz, Horwitz and Cope, 1986). Many researchers are still seeking the effects of anxiety on language learning and the ways to overcome it. Horwitz, Horwitz and Cope (1986) named three main causes of anxiety and these are communication apprehension, test anxiety and fear of negative evaluation. They developed a 33-item Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale. In the current study, this questionnaire will be given to the students to find out their anxiety level. The students will be English prep school students at Anadolu University. The questionnaire will be distributed to 60 beginner level and 60 intermediate level students. The aim of handing out the questionnaire to different level students is to see whether the students’ anxiety level changes as they get more proficient. Also, in the present study, it will be analyzed if gender makes a difference in anxiety level. That is, a comparison will be made between the male and the female students’ anxiety level.
