Abstract:
Aware of the importance of improving reading comprehension, the administration of a high-school vocational training (VT) center invited a team of university researchers to integrate reading comprehension strategies into its secretarial, accounting, and computer support programs. However, these strategies are usually taught by teachers specialized in French, which is not the case of VT teachers. It is in this context that an action research project was carried out to train 15 VT teachers with an innovative approach to integrate reading comprehension strategies into their secretarial, accounting, and computer support courses. A total of 93 reflective logbooks used to document adoption of this approach and its integration with VT teaching practices were subjected to qualitative analysis. The results indicate that reading strategies were integrated with teaching practices and associated with positive adoption in many ways. These results tell us that is possible for vocational training teacher to adopt practices for improving reading comprehension and that these practices contribute to the academic success of their students within their programs.
