Abstract:
Steel structures have widely been used in the construction of buildings and other Civil Engineering works, and they are still used today. Therefore, it is important that the students of Engineering degrees, such as Civil Engineering, acquire practical knowledge in relation to the control, inspection and monitoring of steel structures during their construction and along their service life.

On the other hand, the introduction of the European Higher Education Area in engineering degrees has entailed important changes in the learning and teaching methodologies, as well as in the planning of the subjects. Moreover, within the European Higher Education Area, the practical knowledge plays an important role, especially in the engineering field, in which the connection between the university and industry is very important.

In this work, it is showed a proposal for introducing the students of Engineering degrees in the main techniques and procedures in order to perform the control, inspection and monitoring of steel structures during their construction and along their service life. The proposal overall consists of explaining to the students several techniques related to the research of mechanical properties of steel structures, as well as how to check the correct execution of welded and bolted joints. Furthermore, the corrosion which can affect the steel structures will also be addressed in the proposal. Finally, the different topics of the proposal are illustrated with several real cases of study.
