Abstract:

This study investigated sex education as correlate of sociosexual functioning among female adolescents with mild intellectual disability in Nigeria. A sample of 950 participants comprising of 600 teachers and 350 parents of female adolescents with mild intellectual disability was selected from the Southeast, Southwest and Southsouth geopolitical Zone through expert sampling technique. Two null hypotheses were formulated to direct the study. A 30 item questionnaire with a 5 point rating scale and reliability coefficient of 0.81 to 0.84 was used to canvass opinions of these participants on how sex education on menstrual hygiene management and sexual behaviors improve sociosexual functioning of female adolescents with mild intellectual disability. The data collected were statistically analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Analysis.

The findings revealed that sex education on menstrual hygiene management and sexual behaviors is significantly related and improve sociosexual functioning of female adolescents with mild intellectual disability. It was recommended among others that sex education should constitute a key aspect of the curriculum and individualized education program for female adolescents with intellectual disability taught consistently using learner-centred approach.
