Abstract:
This study is an attempt to investigate whether teaching English through modern British and American fiction can have a significant effect on proficient students’ intake of English structures with the introductory “it”.

Today, literary texts tend to be successfully integrated into foreign language classroom. This new approach is not obligatory but necessary due to the close link between language and literature. Literary texts are accepted as authentic material, they are an indispensable source to be used in the process of English language teaching.

The article discusses the notion of the author’s speech in modern British and American fiction, its characteristics, peculiarities and practical significance for proficient students. The research focuses on the analysis of sentences with the introductory ‘it’ denoted by the following infinitive, subordinate clause or gerund.

The purpose of the research is to elaborate and show an ingenious approach to English grammar teaching through modern fiction. The author provides a set of classroom activities based on the findings of the research. This technique can enable students to see grammar in a more flexible and exciting way.

Based on the research data, a study conducted among second year university students with English as a second language confirmed that the introduction of such a set of exercises develops students’ understanding of grammar rules and improves the quality of their creative and academic writing.
