Abstract:
The article focuses on the phenomenon of the author’s speech in the English language literature, namely on sentences with the introductory “it” as a means of expressing the author’s evaluation. The author discusses the practical usage of such structures in the process of English teaching.

Authors state their points of view, evaluate events, facts, characters in their works. The author’s evaluation shapes the reader’s opinion, helps the reader to understand issues and problems that authors discuss in their literary works. The use of structures with the introductory “it” in the author’s speech is of great interest as they serve as a means of character drawing. Resorting to this type of constructions authors express their attitude towards various issues denoted by the following infinitive, subordinate clause or gerund.

The main aim of the article is to establish the frequency of occurrence of different semantic types of sentences with the introductory “it”, show different ways of teaching English through these structures and elaborate samples of exercises based on this material.

The importance of the research lies in the fact that the study of the notion of style, the author’s speech and evaluation is essential for a better understanding of a literary text and can help students to analyze fiction texts.
