Abstract:
Children with disabilities are generally seen as inferior in both developed and developing countries. This misconception often leads to their exclusion from most areas of life especially education. However, Lagos State, Nigeria has been commended for her efforts in the provision of special education to challenged children. Unfortunately, many of the facilities for this special education have not been tailored to the needs of beneficiaries. The aim of this study is to propose design guidelines for special education in Lagos State, Nigeria. Using case studies of special schools in Lagos State, the study will determine the appropriateness of existing special schools to the educational needs of challenged children; challenges faced in such schools and proffer design recommendations that can serve as guidelines for future design of special schools in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria and developing countries.
