Abstract:
PURPOSE: To evaluate and analyze the influence of the new syllabus in postgraduate education on the interest of the students in the research.

INTRODUCTION:

According to Bologna’s Declaration (1999), we should adapt our syllabus to conform ourselves to the European Area for Higher Education. One of the most important changes produced to our syllabus by the Declaration is that the master’s degree (DEA/Tesina) disappears. So, the former master’s degree has been turned out to a master’s course.

MATERIAL AND METHODS:

Two methodological points of view are necessary to evaluate which is the future job of the Pharmacy graduate and if research is involved in it or not.

The first methodology employs in this study was:
A group of 29 pupils were selected to evaluate how many time they dedicated to their master degree or PhD.
Two groups of students were selected to compare the syllabus in which they did the PhD.
Group 1: 13 master’s degree
Group 2: 16 doctorate courses (old-fashioned)

The second methodology was:
A retrospective study about PhD students according to their actual job was done and the relationship with the knowledge acquired in PhD period was evaluated too.
Group 1: University position
Group 2: Job as due to PhD formation
Group 3: Job independent of PhD formation
Group 4: Unemployed person

RESULTS:

Results obtained in first methodology (13 masters degree students) according to years employed in PhD studies were
- 69% spent a year to finished the master degree but they worked in their research exclusively
- 31% spent two years (part-time dedication)
Results obtained in first methodology too (16 Doctorate course (old-fashioned) students) according to years employed in PhD studies were
- 96% spent the minimum time allowed to finish this research formation and with exclusive job in it.
- 4% spent three years (part-time dedication)
All of them would like to continue their formation in Pharmacokinetic research and only 26% of these students will not continue the PhD immediately.
Results in relation with how many years are necessary to do the Doctoral Thesis in Pharmaceutical Research are around 4 years.

Analyzing the second methodology to study what is the future of the Pharmacy graduate according to their future position we obtained the follow results:

Group 1: 46% University position
Group 2: 38% Job as due to PhD formation
Group 3: 16% Job independent of PhD formation
Group 4: 0% Unemployed person

CONCLUSION:

Most of students sing up in a PhD research like a hobby but they are not thinking about in their future position in this topic. But when they finished their PhD in Pharmacokinetics, Biopharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology they had acquired a high level of knowledge to work in a high position (well-remunerated) in Pharmaceutical Companies.

The number of years dedicated to get a PhD is not important when our young researchers want to get a job. Nobody of them is unemployed.
