Abstract:
Over the past few years considerable attention has been given to the role of non-cognitive variables in workplace and schoolplace success. the work of Dweck( 2014); Duckworth(2005); and a host of others have provided significant findings of the role of non cognitive variables and their relationship to performance in schools and the workplace. Unfortunately, many institutions are slow in responding to this need to address the impact of non-cognitive variables in student performance and subsequent performance on the job. In this paper, the authors explore the definitions of non cognitive variables vs cognitive variables and their role in changing the development and success of students in classrooms and careers. Participants in this session will focus on the following objectives: what are non-cognitive variables vs cognitive variable; how do you measure non cognitive variables; strategies for teaching non-cognitive variables; and finally participants will have the opportunity to explore and identify those non cognitive variables that might exist in their current work or school environment.
