Abstract:
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) integration competencies are a set of standards that define ICT proficiency in the classroom. This paper investigates the competencies of pre-service science teachers in integrating ICT in two selected colleges in Ghana, aiming at improving the lectures’ teaching strategies and the students’ academic achievement in Science. A case study research design and a qualitative research approach was conducted to identify research progress and gaps regarding the extent of the integration. The Nussbaum ICT integration theory was found as a suitable theoretical framework to guide the study. 2 Heads of Departments and 10 Science Education lecturers were interviewed.The findings revealed that the lecturers’ most common integration competencies displayed by the pre-service teachers in identified colleges include: use office tools, online resources and email communication. The suggested ICT integration competencies that training of pre-service science teachers should targets include: mastering the usage of ICT tools; relating ICT to teaching; Using ICT for assessment and providing feedback; creating an appropriate environment for ICT integration; and developing positive attitudes toward ICT usage.
