PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS’ PREPARATION FOR THE TEACHING OF YORUBA AND ENGLISH LANGUAGES IN NIGERIA: COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

Abstract:
This study investigates pre-service teachers’ preparation for the teaching of Yoruba language in Nigeria by comparing the components of Yoruba instructional methods with that of English instructional methods. The study adopted a survey design using an observational technique. The population for the study consisted of all parts two and three undergraduate students of the Faculty of Education, Obafemi Awolowo University who were on practicum internship. A sample of 50 Yoruba/Education and 78 English/ Education students were selected for the study. The instrument used was the Teaching Practice Assessment Checklist (TPAC) designed by the Faculty of Education to assess their effectiveness based on lesson plan, subject mastery and lesson presentation. Data were analyzed using t-test of independent samples. Findings showed that Yoruba language teachers’ excel in lesson plan and subject master. However there was no significant difference in the lesson presentation of both cohorts.
