Abstract:
This study investigates the environmental quality of Lake Pátzcuaro and Lake Zirahuen in Michoacán, which are vital for the sustainability and well-being of local communities. Assessing the water, soil, and vegetation quality of these lakes is essential to understand their current state and their alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Lake Pátzcuaro is currently under significant threat due to water scarcity, deforestation, and the indiscriminate use of water, which contribute to the degradation of the lake's ecosystem and pose risks to its sustainability and the well-being of surrounding communities.
The objectives of the study were to sample and analyze the water, soil, and vegetation of Lake Pátzcuaro and Lake Zirahuen, identify differences in the quality of these components between the two lakes, and determine if they meet the criteria of the SDGs.
Prior to sampling, students from the Materials and Sustainability course at PrepaTec Morelia campus received training in proper sampling techniques, microscope use, microorganism identification, pH measurement, and organoleptic analysis. Organized in teams of six, they collected samples from the lakes following recommended practices. These samples were then analyzed in the campus laboratory to assess their quality.
Additionally, students visited the Centro Cultural Antiguo Colegio Jesuita and the Museo de Artes e Industrias Populares in Pátzcuaro, integrating this activity with their Artistic Interpretation course to appreciate Michoacán's art and craftsmanship.
The study emphasized the importance of creating environmental awareness among students regarding the conservation of natural resources. Students reflected on the application of sustainability in real environments and the impact of community and authority actions (or inactions) on the environment. They proposed realistic measures to enhance the sustainable development of the lakes based on the three pillars of sustainability. In the laboratory, they conducted pH tests, organoleptic analyses, and identified microorganisms, verifying lake contamination and suggesting actions to improve their quality. This experience fostered a deeper understanding of sustainability and underscored the importance of responsible environmental practices. Keywords:
