Abstract:
The article presents the results of the analysis of students’ errors in translation from English into Russian. The process of evaluation is very important in the educational process of translators as it allows improving the quality of training. First of all, it is necessary to differentiate translations made by professional translators from the translations made by students. These two activities have different objectives. The professional translations are targeted at the exact reproduction of the text content and adaptation of the source text form for target culture norms and conventions defined by a commissioner. The translations made by students are targeted mostly at improvement of translation skills. The evaluation criteria for students’ translations have been developed by some researchers where they classify them as follows: pragmatic errors, cultural errors, and language mistakes. Depending on the type of an error or a mistake teachers can calculate the index which helps in marking. The authors have analyzed the translations of the final year students of the university majoring in translation and came to conclusion that they are good at using translation techniques, they make few pragmatic and cultural errors but make many mistakes in their native language in which they present the information. Thus, the teachers should pay more attention to improving editing skills as students trying to preserve the accuracy of the source text are afraid of changing the form of the text. As a result the target texts look strange for readers. To help students to avoid errors and mistakes the instructors of translation should teach students to analyze and correct their works. They also should pay attention to systemization of the errors and to discuss them in the class or virtually that is important under conditions of pandemic. While doing this kind of work the authors also developed the digital educational resource where students have access to evaluated translations, edit them and preserve the final works in order to present their translations while hunting a job.
