Abstract:
This contribution presents key insights from SONET – Seniors Wellbeing and Safety on the NET, an international initiative dedicated to supporting seniors’ WELL-AGEING through safe and meaningful use of digital technologies. As older adults increasingly rely on online tools to manage communication, everyday tasks and essential e-services, their ability to engage confidently with ICT becomes a key factor in maintaining independence, staying active and continuing to learn. SONET aims to strengthen older adults’ general sense of safety, cybersecurity and social engagement by improving their ICT competences, media literacy and understanding of ambient assisted living (AAL) solutions.

Data collected within SONET shows that many seniors are active online but still face obstacles such as fear of cyber threats, difficulty recognising false information and limited experience with digital interfaces. These barriers restrict their involvement in digital life and limit opportunities for cognitive stimulation linked to regular online interaction. In response, SONET develops an accessible e-tool that includes an artificial-intelligence assistant, audiovisual learning resources, and cognitive-stimulation games designed to help seniors navigate ICT safely, recognise misinformation and build confidence in daily digital tasks. By strengthening these skills, the project helps seniors remain independent, engaged and digitally resilient.

Recognising that older adults often rely on support from others, SONET also offers dedicated training for senior educators, caregivers and family members. A soft-skills toolkit equips them with communication strategies, patience-based approaches and practical techniques to assist older learners effectively. The inclusion of AAL knowledge further supports seniors’ physical safety and independence at home.

The expected outcomes of SONET include stronger ICT skills, improved media literacy, increased cybersecurity awareness and enhanced cognitive engagement. By enabling continuous online interaction in a safe and supportive environment, SONET contributes to seniors’ wellbeing, independence and long-term WELL-AGEING.
