Abstract:
Software applications designed for children solve problems related to the development and training of children, as well as help them gain new experience. They are mainly intended for educational purposes – specifically for acquiring skills such as written, logical or social skills. Educational applications help children teach themselves by controlling the environment and the functionality on their own. This paper presents the requirements for software applications designed to develop and train children under the age of 6. To be classified as educational, the software should be based on the different phases in children development, its content and workflow should stimulate optimal progress and engagement of kids. In the paper we also classify educational applications in several types of categories, because children in different age groups have different needs and skills. Such category types include categorization by age (2 to 4 years old and 4 to 6 years of age), by area of study accordingly to Bloom’s Taxonomy, by genre and by subject.
