Abstract:
This is a desktop review of the pedagogical strategies employed in teaching tourism and hospitality National Diploma programme. Pedagogical strategies continue to be considered as the main drivers guiding lecturers and students in achieving individual and national goals. Students’ main purpose of enrolling into Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) globally is to identify and align themselves with career paths that might open wider horizons into the world of work. It has been established that a student who has gone through the tertiary institutions for a particular course is better placed in life to look for employment or become an independent entrepreneur. A desktop research methodology was adopted and thorough scrutiny of literature on pedagogical strategies was done to expose most of the pedagogical strategies that HEIs in Zimbabwe, use as indicated in the literature review. The findings revealed that identifying appropriate pedagogical strategies is key in training students in different subjects to mold them for career opportunities that address individual, political and socio-economic needs. Furthermore, the study revealed that to avoid negative speculations between industry and HEIs, it is prudent that stakeholders specifically present their expectations for a tourism and hospitality graduate they want to employ. This may help HEIs to apply pedagogical strategies suitable for preparing students with skills, knowledge and competencies industry needs. This paper recommended that there is a need for stakeholders’ input into the teaching and learning of students to determine the type of graduate the industry wants to employ. Educators need to collaborate with industry to promote continuously dialogue that improves and promotes the teaching and learning of students.
