Abstract:
The purpose for this study was to investigate challenges experienced by Foundation Phase (FP) teachers in the teaching of Grade 3 Natural Science and Technology in Life Skills. The FP, in South Africa, constitutes the four years of Early Childhood Development, which includes four grades, such as Grade R to Grade 3. This is the initial stage of formal schooling, where learners’ love for science should start and be nurtured so that they may develop a curiosity about the world and become critical thinkers. The theoretical framework for this study is based on the relationship between the prescribed and the implemented curriculum, which is entrenched in the theory of implementation, that is, the Zone of Feasible Innovation (ZFI). The study used the qualitative approach, a case study design was employed in this study. It is located on the interpretive paradigm. A convenient sampling of five primary schools was used, in which a sum of nine Grade 3 teachers was selected to participate in the study. Data was collected through semi structured interviews. This study confirmed the existence of Foundation Phase teachers that are not favourably inclined towards science and science teaching. The participants in the study had a different understanding on the nature of Natural Sciences and Technology in Foundation Phase as others were just mentioning sections to be covered, others had a totally different ideas as they mentioned tools to be used in the classroom and some were honest to say they don’t have a clue. They pointed out that the quality of training programmes created barriers towards effective implementation of Life Skills CAPS. It was noted that there is a dire need for teachers to experience adequate training to implement Life Skills content. Most of the teachers indicated that they never bother to develop themselves around the subject. On the other hand, they showed an interest to attend the trainings if it can be offered to them. It was noted that most teachers were not confident in teaching Natural Sciences and Technology concepts in the Foundation Phase. They mentioned that training which is not enough is making them not to know what to do and, as a result, they are not creative enough to teach the subject.
