Abstract:
The necessity to refine and improve the quality of education is the most important task of nowadays. Innovative approaches in education and the social sphere are based on the health-preserving and adaptive capabilities of art and creative activity, known as art therapy.

Art therapy is a wide range of different art forms and technologies. The most significant tasks of art therapy are the formation of a holistic picture of the world, the ability to transfer knowledge and skills into the practice of everyday life, support of an active life position. Creative interactive activity makes it possible to reveal new human abilities.

In some countries of the world and primarily in the United States, art therapy is actively used in the educational process. Social art therapy is able to influence not only on the person, but also on the society as a whole, forming new models of behavior in relation to people with special needs.

A brief analytical review of approaches to the application of art therapy techniques in Russia and the United States is presented in the article. The features of using the techniques in various conditions are considered. An estimate of the frequency of the techniques used is given. The most common techniques and promising areas of their application in the USA and Russia have been identified.
