Abstract:
The transition from college to the workplace represents a critical juncture for business students, as academic learning often does not fully align with the practical demands of professional environments. This study explores the pivotal role of internships in bridging this gap and enhancing employability skills among business graduates. Through a comprehensive review of existing literature and analysis of empirical evidence, the research identifies how internships provide students with opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge, develop professional competencies, and gain firsthand exposure to workplace dynamics. Internships are shown to foster essential skills such as critical thinking, effective communication, teamwork, problem-solving, time management, and adaptability, which are highly valued by employers. Moreover, structured internship programs offer a platform for students to understand organizational culture, workplace ethics, and industry expectations, thereby facilitating smoother integration into professional roles upon graduation. The study also emphasizes the mutual benefits of internships, highlighting that employers gain access to motivated, partially trained candidates, while students build networks and enhance their career prospects. Despite these advantages, challenges such as inadequate supervision, limited scope of tasks, and mismatch between academic preparation and workplace expectations can limit the effectiveness of internships. The findings underscore the need for universities and business schools to strategically integrate experiential learning opportunities into curricula, ensuring that internships are well-structured, monitored, and aligned with learning outcomes. By fostering stronger connections between theoretical knowledge and practical application, internships play a crucial role in boosting the employability of business students and preparing them to meet the evolving demands of the modern workplace. This study contributes to a growing body of research advocating for experiential learning as a core component of higher education and provides insights for educators, students, and employers aiming to optimize the transition from college to professional life.
