Abstract:
For bachelor and master programs in the combined field of engineering and management it is very important that students develop both technical as well as management competencies. Due to the strong technical tradition of the University Politehnica of Bucharest, there is a huge experience regarding the transfer of technical competencies towards students. The involvement of management next to engineering started in the early 90’s when several programs started in the field of industrial engineering and management. The majority of graduates from these programs work in management position, usually eithin companies with a strong technical background. Thus the need of students to develop management competencies is labour market driven. Starting from this need the authors’ team decided to analyze means that enable the students of the Faculty of Engineering in Foreign Languages to improve their management competencies, thus increasing the chances that students and graduates will find a good job or start their own business as well as the potential of a higher success rate within multinational companies or with their own start-ups.
For achieving this aim, three dimensions of management competencies are taken into account: knowledge, skill and motivation. The paper analyzes various means used by the authors in the last decade in order to enhance management knowledge, skills and motivation.
