Abstract:

This autoethnography delves into the intricate dynamics of collaborative relationships between Instructional Design Specialists (IDS) and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) within the realm of e-learning development. The study draws upon the author's extensive experience working alongside SMEs in the context of e-learning content creation, particularly in the unique environment of small and medium-sized enterprises, specializing in automated stock handling solutions. The narrative unfolds, chronicling the initial hurdles and misconceptions that posed challenges to this collaboration, and explores the transformation of these relationships over time. Through self-reflection, interviews with a manager, and dialogue with colleagues, the study examines the shifting roles, improved communication, and refined processes that have led to more effective collaboration. Recommendations are put forth, advocating for the adoption of agile methodologies, role clarity, and streamlined communication to enhance e-Learning content development practices. This autoethnography offers valuable insights for organizations seeking to optimize their e-learning development processes and lays the groundwork for future research to validate and refine the proposed strategies in real-world settings, contributing to the ongoing evolution of instructional design in the digital age.
