Abstract:
The main aim of a time series analysis is to analyze time series data in order to extract useful statistics and other characteristics of the data. Time series analysis is the aim in many basic statistics courses. For example, the subject “Quantitative Techniques I” of the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Granada includes contents about this topic. When dealing with topics such as time series, it is important that students solve themselves many exercises in order to learn the different aspects about the topic under study. However, some problems can be presented. First, if the same exercises are proposed, students can copy the solutions of the exercises from other students. Second, if exercises with different data are proposed, the teacher has the problem of checking many different exercises series. We propose a teaching tool, using the software R, that solves the aforementioned problems. In particular, we have prepared a function on R that gives to each student individual exercises about time series. Furthermore, when students solve properly the proposed exercises, our function on R gives to the students a personal code, which is used by the teacher to check all the exercises, i.e., a simple code is used by the teacher to check the exercises proposed to a student.
