Abstract:
This qualitative case study examines the link between education on social change and its role in addressing climate change in contemporary Muslim majority societies, with a specific focus on Muslim environmentalism. The study utilizes a qualitative case study approach to critically analyze educational modernization and educational reform projects in two cases: the Nurul Haramain pesantren in Lombok and the Millenia World School. These institutions represent Islamic education and secular education, respectively, and their policies and approaches towards climate change are compared and contrasted.
The research delves into the rising field of Islamic environmentalism and explores global Muslim perspectives on climate change, considering regional differences and various interpretations among Muslims. Through in-depth interviews, document analysis, and observation, the study uncovers the importance of religion and its doctrines in shaping environmental attitudes, with a particular emphasis on the ecological concepts of Tauhid, Khalifah, Mizan, and Maslahah in Islamic environmental ethics.
Moreover, the research investigates the proactive measures taken by the eco-Islamic boarding school, Nurul Haramain pesantren, in promoting environmental care. The implementation of policies such as eco-pesantren initiatives, clean environment programs, waste-burning stoves, conservation of critical land, and free tree planting, showcases the integration of religious teachings with environmental values. The pesantren's label as "Green Haramain" serves as a clear indicator of its commitment to environmental protection.
In contrast, the research examines how the Millenia World School, a secular educational institution, approaches climate change education through an awareness-driven curriculum. The use of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) allows students to engage directly with real-world problems, encouraging critical thinking and a sense of environmental stewardship.
The study concludes with implications for Islamic education, suggesting the need for concrete curricular integration of religion and the environment. The qualitative case study approach contributes to a deeper understanding of how religious teachings influence environmental attitudes and policy implementation in educational institutions. Collaboration between religious leaders and environmentalists is recommended to enhance understanding of environmental science among religious scholars, fostering broader societal awareness of climate change challenges and the importance of environmental sustainability within Muslim-majority societies. Keywords:
