Abstract:
The motivation of a child with autism spectrum disorders is important and determines. The success of involvement in educational activities, the quality of the performance of actions and satisfaction with the results achieved. When planning activities, it is recommended to give the child freedom of choice, considering his cultural context. An individualized approach suggests to take into account the personal characteristics of a person as well (Jones et al., 2018). Then children are motivated to accept challenges, get involved in educational processes, and feel internal satisfaction (O'Brien & Kuhaneck, 2019). Researchers agree that various teaching methods are needed to improve children's skills and motivation. The resolution of light and shadows, their variability is attractive in the educational process. This activity provides pleasant moments, strengthens children's playfulness and social connections, stimulates sensory and cognitive functions (Mizrachi & Muntean, 2018). Previous research has shown that shadow theater can provide significant educational benefits for children with autism spectrum disorders (Benisrael & Nelken, 2009). It also makes sense to include parents in joint activities, bringing family experiences and traditions closer together and directing them to encourage children's motivation.

The aim of the study is to reveal how the use of elements of the Shadow Theater and the participation of parents promote children's motivation in the educational process. The objectives of the research are to assess the motivation of children's involvement in activities during traditional classes. To investigate how parents' participation in the educational process affects children’s motivation and to reveal the influence of the inclusion of Shadow Theater elements in activities on children's motivation. Research methods – analysis of scientific literature; semi-structured interview; diary of observations; text content analysis method. The research is based on qualitative research methodology.

Criterion selection was chosen for the study sample: children with autism spectrum disorders and one of their parents who wanted to participate in the study were selected.

10 informants (5 children and 5 parents) participated in the study. Children's age - 7-9 years. In accordance with ethical principles, consents to participate in the research have been obtained.

The research took place in Vilnius Complex Care Center “Šeimos slėnis”, March 21, 2022 – 6 May.

The results of the study showed that children's involvement in traditional educational activities is uneven, motivation is not long-lasting. When Shadow Theater elements were included in the classes, obvious interest, quick and long-term involvement and stronger motivation of children were observed than during traditional classes. Good communication between parents and children, cooperation during the study was observed.
