Abstract:
In the Predict-Observe-Explain approach, students are expected to apply their logical thinking when conducting experiments. It is one of the approaches that is effective in the learning of the sciences and it deals mostly with experiments and yet promotes reflection on the scientific concepts learned in class. The paper sought to explore the use of the Predict-Observe-Explain approach if it promotes the teaching and learning of Natural Science using practical activities. The study was informed by Vygotsky’s social constructivism and Piaget’s cognitivism. Both theories constructively align with the study as they encourage interactive learning in class and embraces the value of each learner. The study was located in the interpretive research paradigm, followed a qualitative approach and adopted a case study design. The study used convenient sampling based on proximity to the researchers. Out of 30 teachers, 10 Natural Science teachers were interviewed and data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Content analysis was utilised to analyse data collected for the study and the data were coded and categorised to enable thematic analysis. The findings revealed that Natural Science teachers were aware of the approach. However, some of the teachers still experience challenges and they apply theory than practical due to the lack of knowledge about the Predict-Observe-Explain approach and resources. The researchers are of the opinion that the challenge need urgent intervention. The study recommends that all the stakeholders of the Department of Basic Education like subject education specialists, educator subject committees and cluster leader educators should work together and form a committee that will look at these challenges affecting the content gap so that teaching and learning can be done effectively. Cluster leaders and science specialists need to organise more workshops that concentrate more on improving the skills of educators in the use of the Predict-Observe-Explain approach.
