Abstract:
Knowledge of Economics and application is important for the survival of an individual and society at large essentially in developing countries like South Africa. consequently. Moreover, In Economics education, a student will learn critical thinking techniques that will enable them to understand the problems and issues facing society today. Pre-service teachers enrol for a four-year teacher education qualification that will enable them to qualify as novice teachers in the schools specialising in economics and management sciences specifically focusing on economics as a subject in economics education. Competent pre-service teachers in economics education will have to demonstrate a high level of understanding in calculations and graphs across various topics in economics. Economics calculations and graphs including the multiplier effect are a deemed a complex exercise for pre-service teachers who aspire to be novice economics teachers. The paper aims to reflect on the experiences of pre-service economic and management science teachers in learning economics calculations and graphs in various topics.

Furthermore, the goal is to contextualise their ability to teach calculations and graphs as novice teachers in the classroom. The study will use the qualitative research approach. Architecture theory will be used as the lens for this study. Participants’ experiences and factors that affected them will be discussed as data collected using participatory action learning and action research (PALAR) approach as a form of critical education science. A questionnaire and free attitude discussions will be used to generate data from the pre-service economic and management sciences teachers specializing in Economics. Critical discourse analysis was used to arrive at the following broad finding: Pre-service EMS teachers should adopt innovative ways to calculate Keynesian Multiplier in the new normal. The study will inspire deeper research into the pedagogies and teaching strategies that can be used by pre-service teachers to enhance the quality of teaching economics calculations and graphs in the classroom.
