Abstract:
Virtual Worlds (VWs) are shared virtual spaces accessed through one’s computer that allow for a person to become immersed in a constructed 3D environment shared with others in different locations. Such spaces can facilitate all manner of activities from entertainment to group training to psychological support. Over the last decade the use of virtual worlds for a wide range applications has grown and there is increasing evidence of the power and effectiveness of virtual world deployed experiences. This presentation will cover the use of Virtual Worlds for three specific projects: online Mindfulness classes that have been helping soldiers with stress relief; ANSIBLE, a virtual world ecosystem to aid future Mars-bound astronauts in coping with their social isolation and sensory monotony; and Eireport, an effort to bring more of the intangible and sacred spaces into virtual worlds where they can be widely accessed.
