Abstract:
The Council of the European Union developed the Europe 2030 growth strategy, which seeks to promote smart, sustainable, and inclusive growth, states that schools must act and implement strategies that promote students learning and results achievement, providing them study and learning techniques, transforming them in active learners. According to COM (2019), Education, training and life-long learning are indispensable to create a sustainability culture.Thus, this paper focuses on the implementation of a Study Skills Training Program (SSTP) in basic and secondary level, within a sample of 253 students, from 10 to 18 years old. It intended to explore and develop basic and secondary level students learning and study abilities during a period of 7 months.
The SSTP attempts to guide students on:
(i) adopting the most effective learning techniques;
(ii) planning specific goals and tasks during test studying;
(iii) managing their study time using a strong study plan;
(iv) enhancing their study using the best study skills.
SSTP aims to stimulate students´ minds based upon 8 key-action factors or principles that, among others, enables students to:
(1) figure out what study and learning skills they are not good at, to practice those skills whenever possible and recognize that weaknesses is a strength;
(2) become an active learner and be prepared to work ideas by active reading, writing, speaking, and listening and
(3) become a questioner to be engage in lectures and discussions by asking questions.
All formal procedures were performed with local education authorities. It was adopted a quasi-experimental design. Data collected from students, before and after SSTP intervention, as the students’ questionnaires and global testing average scores were analysed using the software Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS v.26).
The results revealed that the resources created opportunities for students to learn and practice memory techniques, learn to study and test-taking strategies, and time management.
This study contributes to the diffusion and appreciation of the study techniques settings as high potential on learning and greater scientific literacy promoters and may help to provide a basis for the development of other study skills and study techniques resources for all stakeholders in education.Keywords:
