Abstract:
Industry 4.0 introduces new challenges for the training of industrial engineers, who must master technologies such as autonomous robotics, computer vision, and digital integration. Fully updating curricula requires significant time and resources, making final academic projects an effective way to incorporate these competencies. This work proposes a project line focused on the practical application of enabling technologies through the design and development of a mobile manipulator robot built using the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 educational platform, complemented by a smartphone as an onboard camera and image processing software. Although the presented implementation uses MATLAB, the solution can be replicated with open-source tools such as Python, reinforcing its accessibility. The prototype enables obstacle detection and manipulation in a controlled physical environment, integrating concepts of programming, mechanical design, autonomous control, and computer vision. This proposal is grounded in experiential learning, following the Kolb cycle, to ensure that students acquire technical and transversal skills through practice, reflection, and application in new contexts. It demonstrates the potential of final projects to prepare future industrial engineers for the current technological challenges using affordable resources and active methodologies.
