Abstract:
Computer-assisted experimental work (CAEW) is a new insight into laboratory teaching compared to the traditional methodology that is usually applied with experimental subjects. Some of its characteristics are:
− It introduces the use of new technologies at a more accessible level to students;
− It does not involve a complete break with traditional work methods since classical experimental designs are still assembled in the laboratory;
− It uses specific software to immediately visualise and analyse the results obtained from the mathematical treatment.
In the present work, the application of the CAEW methodology to the development of two laboratory practicals that students conducted during their first year at university is shown. These practicals are "Determination of carbonates and bicarbonates" and "Determination of the acetic acid content in a commercial vinegar sample". These contents are included in the programmes proposed for the subjects "Fundamentals of Chemical Engineering" taught in the Technical Agricultural Engineering Degree and "Introduction to the chemical laboratory" taught in the Chemistry Degree.
The methodology involves a couple of students using a pH sensor connected to a computer in order to detect the final point of the considered titrations. In the meantime, the rest of the group uses a chemical indicator for the same purpose. The results are comparable, but the computer-assisted method offers significant improvements, such as:
− Minimisation of unintentional errors;
− Suitability for following the titration on the screen via the calibration curve shown by the software;
− Performance of the final calculation without having to use spreadsheets.
