USING THE MOODLE ACTIVITY “DATABASE” TO SUPPORT SELF-LEARNING AND COLLABORATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING IN SOIL SCIENCE

The first objective of this project was to introduce new methodologies for improving the self-learning process. This paper describes how to use the activity module in Moodle called database to support learning activities in the field of Soil Science. Web resources driven by databases differ from conventional web based resources in that they do not exit in separate forms of HTLM but they are generated dynamically through interaction of the student with the database. These resources are called “dynamic web pages” and constructing one is time consuming and requires certain level of technological skills. The module database in the teaching platform Moodle offers a way around these inconveniences. Once a professor becomes acquainted with the platform he/she can update the contents easily.
This self-learning material has an interactive character that integrates information in several formats (pictures, text, spreadsheets…), and gives the opportunity to generate study cases in the same platform. The module can be configured through templates for specific searches. The retrieved information can be used by students as well as by professors to generate study material.
