Abstract:
LMSs are complex platforms with many valuable services for the information system's users. However, most of the time, these services are confined inside educational settings. At the same time, as proposed in this paper, they could be more profitably used to support many other tasks inside the organization. This paper explores the grounds for a new generation of LMSs based on a 20-years+ experience in designing, delivering, and maintaining a self-made LMS. This redesign foresees LMSs as more suitable for collaboration platforms, more integrated into the hosting information system, and supplying collaboration services to the rest of an organization's users. Accordingly, services provided by the LMS under the e-learning umbrella should be heavily re-engineered compared to their original structure. They must be generalized in the internal data and software structure, from a specific learning context to collaboration, to allow extended usage of provided services beyond pure education contexts.
