EFFECTIVENESS OF MICROSOFT TEAMS AS A FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT TOOL AND IMPROVING STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IN ONLINE CLASSROOM

Abstract:
Throughout the 20th Century, technology has been supporting the online educations and knowledge transfer from the early childhood to the various educations and trainings. The importance of technology in education plays a key role in delivering and supporting an effecting method of delivering and learning.

The conventional face to face teaching was a preferable teaching by both teachers and students. Whereas Web 2.0 technologies and educational tools are used as a supporting digital resource in disseminating and supporting knowledge between the students and the educators. Universities in ASEAN countries such as Multimedia University, Malaysia has incorporated its Multimedia Learning System (MMLS) as a medium for knowledge repository and communication between students and lecturers.

With the pandemic COVID- 19, both educators and students are forced to rely on the Learning Management System (LMS) which are provided or purchase by the Universities. In Multimedia University provides its own LMS which is known as MMLS acts as a communication medium and knowledge repository between lecturers and students. This is where, the lecturer used to post announcement, sharing teaching materials, quizzes and assignment submissions. The university also purchase google suite as tools to support physical teaching and learning. In April 2020, physical classes are converted to online classes. Lecturer are using Google classroom or Microsoft team as a medium for online teaching. Assessment’s submission such as quizzes, assignments and online test are done by using the available tools in Google Suite, Microsoft teams, Quizziz and other online educations applications.

The transition and challengers faced are gradually acknowledge when adapting purely to online classes. A simple survey was conducted to the students to get their feedback on their difficulties during online classes. 59% of students, find difficulties in keeping track of their assessment of learning during the online classes. 57% of students finds the classes are too long and 51% students has a difficulty in understanding and figuring out the teaching modules.

The purpose of this studies is to see the effectiveness of Microsoft Teams in assisting both lecturers and students in keeping track of subject assessments. Several integrated features in Microsoft Teams will be utilized that will assist both lecturer and student feedbacks and improve interactions with students throughout the semester. Lecturers with basic Microsoft Teams knowledge and skills will be selected to undergo a training on how to conduct the formative assessment during classes. At the end of the semester, students have to participate a survey on the effectiveness of Microsoft Team in improving the engagement between lecturers and students.
