Assessment plays central role in any educational process. Multiple-choice questions (MCQ) are generally scored using a traditional number right scoring method, where students need to pick one option as the correct answer. While this method is easy to use, it has been heavily criticized for guessing and failure to credit partial knowledge. In spite of continued research in scoring methods, traditional number right scoring method remains the most popular and widely used method.
This paper briefly describes multiple choice questions, mentions advantages and disadvantages of traditional scoring methods and introduces a new Dynamic Number Right and Elimination (DNRE) method of scoring, which is dynamic combination of number right and elimination methods. Unlike well known traditional methods, DNRE method gives examinees opportunity to use all benefits of traditional methods and overcome weaknesses like crediting partial knowledge, guessing, and misconceptions.
