Abstract:
This mixed-methods study examines structured AI integration in professional skill development at a university involving over 300 first-year business students. Using a three-phase approach, familiarisation, assessment, and reflective evaluation, the research systematically incorporates Copilot into job application training, positioning AI as a collaborative learning partner that develops "AI-augmented competencies" combining technological fluency, critical thinking, and authentic communication. The study addresses a critical gap between genuine learning outcomes and task completion. Preliminary findings reveal reduced student anxiety, enhanced outputs through structured pedagogical guidance, and unexpected equity benefits for students facing traditional barriers to career services.
This research directly addresses the evolving intersection of technology and pedagogy in professional preparation. Drawing on the framework for leveraging AI to promote quality education and critical engagement, we position AI as a collaborative learning partner rather than a replacement for human instruction. Our approach aligns with research findings that successful AI integration in workplace skill development requires structured implementation maintaining focus on human judgement and creativity. The study develops what researchers’ term "AI-augmented competencies", skills combining technological fluency with critical thinking and authentic communication, directly relevant to contemporary discussions about digital transformation in education.
This paper targets three key stakeholder groups. First, educators teaching professional communication, career development, or business courses seeking practical frameworks for AI integration. Second, academic developers and learning designers responsible for implementing institution-wide AI policies and support structures.
