Abstract:
Whilst organizations seem to be wanting leaders who can coach, there seems to be a gap between expectations and preparing managers for the ‘most challenging’ coaching role. Specific workplace training is often not provided, and leaders are required to learn on the go. With this study we want to explore the question of whether and how well leaders can coach pre- and post a training intervention. Our study examines this topic by implementing a test-intervention-retest of participants in several training courses via evaluations of coaching videos by 250 participants and 20 expert coaches. The results show to what degree different coaching skills can be learned in a short amount of time and bring insights into self- and peer evaluations. Using an online system for feedback, we compare evaluations of leaders themselves, peers and from coaching experts. With this study we contribute to answering questions around workplace training for leaders, leadership skill in times of uncertainty how to best train leaders in the skill set of coaching.
