Abstract:
The inclusion of children and adults with disabilities presents significant challenges to Physical Education (PE) instructors who must attempt to meet the diverse needs of all students. According to several studies, many teachers in Germany do not feel prepared to deal with the increasing diversity in their classes. Teachers are often faced with the question how to structure the lessons to effectively include students with disabilities. Research has demonstrated that the online environment may be an effective setting for courses in PE, offering greater flexibility for the learner and instructor. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the implementation of e-learning elements that contribute to learning environments that promote engagement and active learning, as well as a closer connection of theory and practice elements in teacher education.

The article describes a practical example of the development of a training course in a virtual learning environment in a German context. The course is designed for any individuals (e.g. teacher trainees, physical educators) with litte teaching experience in inclusive settings. In order to ensure the learning success, however, it is important to consider certain factors in designing and developing online learning courses. Moreover, the expectations and goals of the course should be clearly defined.

On the completion of the course in this paper, the participant will be able to:
• Describe major characteristics associated with different disabilities and how to deal with it in PE lessons (as measured through a quiz in the end of the course).
• Describe different teaching approaches and didactic models than can serve as a guideline for didactic choices in Adapted Physical Education (APE).
• Plan own lessons in APE based on “good practice” examples of experienced physical educators making effective instructional adaptations in different sports.

Participants’ reflections seem to confirm that online education courses can provide students and prospective teacher with expertise that may lead to more confidence when teaching students with special needs.
