Abstract:
In recent decades, climate change has emerged as a paramount global concern, with adverse impacts including pollution, extreme weather events, climate-induced migration, and biodiversity loss. Beyond these environmental consequences, the climate crisis increasingly affects mental health and overall well-being, giving rise to what is now widely described as climate anxiety. This presents a profound challenge not only for society but also for contemporary education systems, which are tasked with preparing young people for an uncertain ecological future while supporting their emotional resilience.
This presentation introduces the concept of climate anxiety as an emerging psychological and pedagogical issue and examines its manifestations across different age groups. Building on current research in environmental psychology and sustainable education, the presentation offers evidence-based strategies for addressing climate-related distress in educational settings. Particular attention is given to age-appropriate communication: how to discuss the climate crisis with young children in a way that is honest yet emotionally safe; how to support adolescents in transforming anxiety into agency; and how to integrate sustainability education that balances realism with hope.
The aim of the presentation is to equip educators, researchers, and practitioners with practical guidance on how to speak about climate anxiety and the climate crisis with children of various ages, helping them to navigate complex emotions while fostering constructive engagement with sustainability challenges. Keywords:
