Abstract:

Nowadays, despite the increasing popularity of the English language, the interest to studying the French language is growing in Russia. French is one of the official and working languages in many international organizations UN including. Most of documents of the international law are compiled in French.

The ability to comprehend and translate the administrative legal documents is one of the key competencies of a specialist in international law. This competence should be trained at higher educational institutions. However, the teaching practice shows that approaches and technologies of administrative legal documents translation training have not been developed at this time. There are no teaching materials for this type of translation for the French – Russian languages.

The paper focuses on different approaches to teaching translation of administrative and legal documents.

Students learn special terminology; lexical, grammatical and functional characteristics of some types of administrative legal texts. They are taught to structure the text to be translated (to analyze the text of the original document, to determine the parameters of translation, to identify language units that can cause extra difficulties in translating, to select the translation strategy and edit the translation).

The approach presented by the authors can be topical for training translation; it was experienced, examined and tested in a number of Russian universities.
