Abstract:
The Degree in Chemistry in the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) is structured in three modules: Basic, Fundamental and Advanced. The structure in modules allows adapt the formative activities in an integrated and coordinated way, taking advantage of the synergies between Subjects and Areas of Knowledge. Likewise, this structure facilitates the designed general composition of the Science and Technology Faculty (FCT/ZTF) which needs a high degree of compatibility between the offered degrees during the first course.
Basic and Fundamental Modules are compulsory for all the students whereas the Advanced Module groups the Degree Essay, obligatory, and the optionality of the Degree. The Basic Module has 60 ECTS credits, the Fundamental one 120 and the Advanced 60, including the Degree Essay with 18 credits. As it has been indicated, the Basic Module is the one that ensues from the tree structure designed for the Degrees that are offered in the FCT/ZTF, where the Degrees in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Geology and Mathematics, and two Engineerings (Chemical and Electronics) are included. In fact, the Basic Module of the Degree of Chemistry is compatible with the first year of Chemical Engineering and compatible in a 70 % with the Degrees of Biology (including Biochemistry and Biotechnology) and Geology. In the Basic Module those subjects that constitute the base of the scientific knowledge are included. If the subjects included in this module are analyzed, it is possible to verify that a 40 % corresponds to the subjects relating to the Chemistry, being the theoretical and the practical contents equally distributed. The rest of the contents correspond with the foundations in Mathematics and Statistics (20 %), Physics (20 %), Biology (10 %) and Geology (10 %). The second module of the Degree in Chemistry, named Fundamental, is the core of the Degree and the own matters of Chemistry and that complementary knowledge that support an intimate relation with the Chemistry are included in it. The internal structure of this module is more complex, since the 120 credits that it includes, are developed in three courses, from second up to fourth.
The Advanced Module constitutes the last step of the degree in Chemistry. In this module the Degree Essay, of obligatory nature, is combined with other 18 credits, the optional matters proposed from the different Departments and those offered by the Euskara Guiding Plan (12 credits), as well as the recognition of 6 credits for the activities related to the perspectives of genre and those that favor the fulfillment of the aims gathered in the strategic plan of the UPV/EHU in the area of Social Responsibility and the activities that promote the enterprising attitude, the participation in university cultural, sports, caring activities and of cooperation and student representation.
