THE DEGREE ESSAY IN THE INORGANIC CHEMISTRY SUBJECT OF THE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FACULTY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY (UPV/EHU)

J.L. Mesa

UPV/EHU (SPAIN)
The degree essay (DE) is the last subject that the student carry out before the graduation where a lot of the abilities acquired during the grade will be included and summarized. It is based on the carrying out of an experimental or theoretical-practical work related to the own and similar to Chemistry subjects, and the presentation and defense of it in public.

Generally, the DE management will be carried out by the Chemistry grade studies commission. In each academic course, this teaching commission will establish the framework in which all the DE related activities will be developed. Specifically, this commission will establish in a general way the criteria and the requirements that the student need to comply with to carry out and defense the DE. The DE content will consist on experimental and theoretical-practical work on any Chemistry subject or on related subjects, which will be carried out in any department of the UPV/EHU with teaching in the Chemistry degree and under the direction of a lecturer of this department. Likewise, the accomplishment of the DE in any Research Centre or company is also considered possible, providing that not conflict with the recognition that is done of the practices in company is caused, and that it should be supervised by a teacher of the UPV/EHU with aptitude to direct the DE in Chemistry.

Before the beginning of the academic course, the degree studies commission will obtain from the departments with teaching assigned in the Degree the titles of the DE that are going to be offered, so that every lecturer is responsible of only one work or co-direct a maximum of two works for academic course. Of the published offer, the students will select the work that they want to realize. Likewise, the students will be able to propose to the degree studies commission the works that they want to realize out of the UPV/EHU, with indication of the company or center of accomplishment, the director of the work and the teacher that supervise the work. The works offered by the professorship will have to constitute innovative works and that, as far as possible, are inside the active lines of research, in order that the incorporation of the students in a work team is guaranteed, as far as possible. The realized work would take form on a report that will be later presented, defended and evaluated. It is recommended to realize the reports according to homogeneous format and style, with an extension that does not overcome 50 pages and with an identical structure to research works. The use of English will be favored for the draft and presentation of the report. The presentation will be realized in a public act and will consist of an exhibition of 15 minutes and of a discussion not longer than 15 minutes. To make the presentation in the same language than the report is recommended. In every board of examiners, three doctor lecturers will take part of at least two related areas of knowledge and that are competent in the language in which the report has been written. For the evaluation of the work the formative, of integration in the work team and of communication aspects will be valued.
