Abstract:
"Intellectual identity " category is defined as a multi-level personality-based dynamic structure which includes conscious and unconscious aspects that provide internal integrity identity and personality certainty at all stages of intellectual development, as well as its continuity and sustainability over time. Formation of identity is expressed in increasing the number of attributes of professional activities and professional relationships, as reflected in the mind of a specialist in overcoming the stereotyped image of a professional, and creating a holistic vision of themselves in the context of the entire career (A. K. Markov). Intellectual identity provides a sufficient level of intellectual centrism and stable mental position of the subject.
Intellectual identity of academics is studied as an object of this research paper’s framework. The topicality of the research problem is stipulated due to the increasing role of higher educations in modernization of a social system, and necessity of effective use of the intellectual potential of academics of universities in the development of innovative economy of the country.

To determine the scope of the study the authors have attempted to give a definition to the concept " intellectual identity" in order to define principles and objectivities of the development of competitiveness in higher education. Consequently, "intellectual identity" has been considered from the perspective of philosophy and social studies.

In the course of developing success in a competitive environment, higher educations define tough requirements for its academics in order to raise the rating of the HEI. This, in its turn, defines a new context where degrees and types intellectual identity of academics is discovered. In the framework of this study the authors have examined objective and subjective factors affecting the formation of intellectual identity of academics in the context of global integration.

To determine the degree of awareness of the concept of " intellectual identity" by academics, and the complex of factors that affect and determine the intellectual identity of academics, the authors have conducted surveys, questionnaires and interviews in two universities in Kazakhstan (private and budget-funded higher education). The results of research methods have been processed. On the basis of the research method results, main factors that affect the intellectual identity, main features of the intellectual identity of academics, and the principle and the structure and the content of intellectual identity were identified.
