Abstract:
This work was developed within the framework of the research "The habitus of study: constructor of a new reality in the basic education of the metropolitan area of Natal" which is being developed with the support of CAPES along with the Observatory of Education. It acts, especially on the problem of academic performance of students in basic education of the public schools in the Metropolitan Region of Natal (MRN). Thus, the aim of this paper is to construct a typology of the students in the 9th year of basic education, attending the public schools (state or municipal) of MRN, 2009, and assess, according to these profiles, what personal characteristics of the student and their families: economic, social and cultural capital as well as teaching practices, generate profiles (environments) capable of favoring a good educational development, measuring them by the performance obtained in the assessments in mathematics and portuguese language. The data used were provided through the microdata of the Brazil Exam 2009 (SAEB) held by INEP. The method of Grade of Membership (GoM) was used to the construction of profiles of membership of the students, according to their characteristics. With these profiles it was possible to verify, which ones were effectively generators of good academic performances among the curricular components evaluated. The results indicate that students classified to the profile considered as of good environment, were able to achieve better academic performance, both in portuguese language as well as in mathematics, when compared to the extreme adverse and deficit profiles.
