Abstract:
Mexico City is facing a mobility crisis characterized by chronic traffic congestion and a high rate of traffic accidents. This situation has serious human, economic, and social consequences, including loss of life, overwhelmed emergency services, and a negative impact on the quality of life of its inhabitants. Traditional interventions, focused primarily on infrastructure and regulation, have proven insufficient to resolve the root of the problem, which lies in the behavior and interaction of the road users themselves.

The objective of this work is to promote road safety culture among UPIEM teachers at the IPN in Mexico City, showcasing elements related to urban mobility. These include the mobility hierarchy pyramid, the categorization of roadways, and the distribution of spaces in a complete streets model.

The methodology consisted of 3 phases. In Phase One, the first-semester cohort of the Urban Mobility Engineering program was selected to form four teams with an undefined number of members. In the second phase, the teams were asked to select a topic to develop related to the promotion of road safety culture. This included the mobility hierarchy pyramid, the categorization of roadways, and the allocation of space for each type of road user in a complete streets model. The third phase consisted of an oral presentation to the UPIEM teachers, showcasing a poster containing information on promoting road safety culture, followed by a question-and-answer session.

The results show that the teachers were previously unaware of the mobility hierarchy and the role that each road user must play. It was also found that this activity sparked the students' interest in developing promotion and awareness activities on road safety culture, aimed at teachers from other units and elementary-level students.
