Abstract:
The paper presents the results of the research aimed at teaching cultural competence and nurturing patriotism in higher school students by enlightening them on the legal and regulatory features of the UNESCO World Heritage resources in the Russian Federation based on the classification suggested by the authors.

The subject matter is a training model to inspire the higher school students to identify their role in the overall sustainability process, shape their self-identity, instill ethical values in them, increase cultural competence, and eventually enhance their sense of patriotism.

The objective of the research is to propose a classification of the UNESCO World Heritage resources in the Russian Federation that highlight the significance of Russian self-identity and cultural competence in a diverse classroom. Based on the classification the students’ insights into the cultural values of the Russian Federation were drawn through a questionnaire. A number of the UNESCO world heritage resources in the Russian Federation were in the focus of the researchers’ attention. The results of the questionnaire show the increased patriotism and pride in the cultural and historic monuments of the Russian Federation.

The sample included students of Moscow State University of Management, 1-2 grades (Bachelor Degree), who are lectured on the legal issues of sustainability.

The findings of this research have shown that teaching through the UNESCO World Heritage resources allows the students to practice openness and positive change by demonstrating acceptance of difference, be flexible in diplomatic decisions, be sensitive to others, which enhances cultural competence and awareness.

The paper summarizes the results of the study that can be widely applicable in teaching legal and economic related subjects.
