Abstract:
The Botanic Garden of the University of Valencia, was founded in the year 1567, attached to the Faculty of Medicine, as a simple and herb garden, dedicated exclusively to the study and production of drugs and substances for medicines. Although it changed location many times, it has been in the present site for more than 200 years. In 1802 it was installed in the “Hort de Tramoyeres”, where it is currently situated. For these reason, there are very old and very large plants, which are sure to make an impression.

In 1985, El Botànic was recognised in the University Statutes as a “university centre for research, teaching and culture”, and became dependent on the central governing body of the university. The most recent restoration, that begun in 1990, was concluded in 1999 and allowed for the reclamation of this spectacular green space. It now has a major botanical collection, with very rare plants from very remote regions, which grow here in the open air thanks to the softness of the Mediterranean climate. Especially interesting are the collections of palm trees (one of Europe´s most complete) and tropical trees, and those of cacti and other desert plants.

In the XXIth century, it has become a reference centre for research, conservation and education. Related to this last issue, one of its functions is the diffusion of the knowledge related to botany, to the different social sectors, from scientists to citizens.
This project addresses the role of communication and dissemination of knowledge of the Botanic Garden, encouraging recreational use of the garden, adding informational value to visitors.

Based on the success of social networks in improving the diffusion and visibility of projects and initiatives, this project aims to develop a virtual resource on the existing collections of living plants in the garden, so that visitors can access through a application for tablets and smartphones. Thus, a citizen who quietly strolls through the garden, can download the application and approach different plants and elements of the garden, no need for the presence of an expert or guide.

In order to carry out this project, botanical records, will be developed to the most outstanding garden plants, and new Audio guided educational tours will be plotted, so that all users can observe and enjoy the garden, at the same time they obtain information of the different examples of plants that are in the garden.

It is essential that this information is presented in an attractive and accessible form for the public to involve themselves in the knowledge of plants and the best use of nature. The natural world and the flora will be presented to visitors as something fascinating and important, encorouging them to learn more about it.
