EDUCATIONAL QUALITY IN PRESCHOOL IN MEXICO: A BRIEF REVIEW ON THE CHARACTERISTICS, IMPLICATIONS AND PROSPECTIVENESS

Abstract:The following paper represents a summary of the analysis to the quality of education in Mexico as a result of the reflection and discussion, during a workshop taken at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City. The objective of the workshop was to analyze the characteristics of quality in education in general, in order to be able to analyze the particularities in our personal research areas. In our case the challenge took us to observe the quality in preschool and the report was organized as follows: first of all, considering the most significant aspects of the quality definition according to different sources and authors. Second, using the references in depth, in order to be able to present a general picture of the situation in preschool. It was necessary to adapt the information, in some cases, we had to search for different authors and make them fit according to the mandatory topics because we had to respect a drawn line traced around the topic. The first section of the paper discusses the concept of quality, the complexity of defining the concept and different positions of national and international authors, also, makes emphasis in the situation nowadays. Later, it is presented a discussion on the factors associated to the quality of education in preschool. By way of conclusions, we took the last two aspects reviewed in the workshop during a whole week (32 hours) and used them as a basis for building ideas that allowed us to reflect on the preschools characteristics, the teachers’ roles and the quality of education. It is included a brief review of the Reforms made to the Mexican Political Constitution in the area of education and its impact on the quality of preschool education. Additionally, the paper is structured considering its potential to be used as part of the PhD thesis named: "Use of ICT to teach English in preschool" because most of the information provides important elements that could significantly enhance the development of the context in which it is carried out the investigation.
