Abstract:
The paper deals with humans ability to estimate physical quantities in context of physics education. In our research we tested ability of pupils to estimate values of physical quantities. For this purpose we designed a set of classroom activities suitable for upper primary school. We investigated the limits of pupil's ability to distinguish different values for several physical quantities. Historically people preferred anthropocentric units easy to imagine and use. We focused on estimating the weight, length, distance, area, volume, density, temperature.

The success of estimates of quantities depends on training, memory and other experience. The estimation of the values of the quantities can be divided into relative estimations, where we compare the value of the unknown quantity with the standard and absolute, when we only use our experience and memory.

Applying the correct estimates is important in predicting results.

We will introduce the procedures for improving and training the estimation of values of physical quantities. These activities we presented can serve as a inovation of physics education.
