Abstract:
While humanity is measuring the numerous impacts of socio-political changes, another challenge is stirring the waters, that of artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence (AI) is applied to a wide range of areas. Among the areas in which it is advancing significantly are Healthcare, Finance, Autonomous Vehicles, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Robotics, E-commerce and Recommendation Systems, Cybersecurity, Education, Climate and Environmental Sciences, Gaming and Entertainment. AI's potential applications continue to expand as technology advances and new opportunities arise. The role of teachers is vital in leveraging AI effectively to promote holistic development in students and enhance learning outcomes.
This paper examines the offer of artificial intelligence in foreign language education and more specifically in French language teaching. Based on insights from relevant studies, the study will examine the effectiveness of artificial intelligence in enhancing foreign language skills. A literature review will be conducted regarding the advantages and challenges associated with using artificial intelligence for foreign language teaching. Following that, a case study containing a description and learning material of an entire unit of a French course at level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) will be presented. Initially, AI was asked to create learning materials for a whole unit of the CEFR A2 level French course. The learning material was collected and structured in accordance with the course needs. As a next step, the generated learning material was analysed and studied in accordance with CEFR specifications. Based on the results of this study, AI is found to have satisfactory answer quality and its use can provide a valuable service to foreign language teachers by allowing them to customize their own learning materials. Certainly, this paper aims to answer the needs of teachers of the 21st century, as well as modern digital societies.
